Ofcom, the UK’s telecoms regulator, has permitted BT to keep its Openreach division, which runs broadband infrastructure throughout the country. Openreach will become a distinct company, but will remain within the BT Group, Ofcom announced on Tuesday. Investors in the telecoms giant breathed a sigh of relief; BT’s shares have risen 6.4% since the news. Competitors such as TalkTalk, which uses Openreach, have called for it to be completely separated from BT, and consumer group Which? called the current service ‘woeful’.
